Doris was born on a family farm in Saturn, Texas, on Dec. 1, 1925, to parents Andrew Jackson Alexander and Polly Martin Alexander. Losing her mother at the age of four, Doris was raised by her dad and her beloved grannie, Sarah Elizabeth Alexander along with her older sister Jewel Smith, her brother Douglass and her twin younger siblings Troy and Joy Alexander. She graduated from Waelder High School and was as faithful attendant at the annual Waelder homecoming.
Doris married her sweetheart, Jack Wilson Burney Sr. in 1944 and she embraced the Burney family as her own. They welcomed two children, Jack Burney Jr. of Humble and Deborah Culak and husband, David, of Gonzales. Jack and Doris enjoyed 25 years of happiness together, but sadly, Jack died while still a young man of 51.
Doris was appointed in his place as the Gonzales County Commissioner for the Waelder precinct. Luckily, Doris’ life reflected her love for Christ and his gospel and a determination to overcome all obstacles.
Doris held several other jobs over her lifetime but was most proud of being the librarian for the Waelder Public Library for 20 years, of which she retired just a couple of years ago. She was known for her beautiful white hair and always dressed fashionably. She especially enjoyed spending time with her five grandchildren as she loved them very much, as they did her, and especially loved fussing over her nine great grandchildren, building a legacy of love. She welcomed everyone into her home with a smile. She enjoyed fairly good health until a few weeks ago when she unexpectedly became ill and was diagnosed with lymphoma.
Friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of Doris Burney at the First Baptist Church of Waelder March 18. Interment at the Elm Grove Cemetery.
