US Marine Willard Gerald Wright, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Leaksville, NC.

US Marine Private First Class Willard Gerald Wright was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, PFC Wright served our country until February 12th, 1968 in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Willard died from an undetermined explosion. His body was recovered. Willard was born on May 7th, 1947 in Leaksville, North Carolina. PFC Wright is on panel 39E, line 015 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

Gerald's family lived in Stoneville for a few years and I can remember him as a small child. His sister, Linda was older and closer to my age. When I took my 5th grade class to Washington, I always showed them his name on the Vietnam Wall and told him of the connection to Stoneville and Eden.

He served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, 3rd MAF.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
