Sharon was born in Coles County, Illinois on July 12, 1944, a daughter of the late Alva and Chloral (Johns) Hanley. She married Robert Paul Juriga on August 19, 1962 and he preceded her on April 26, 2008. Surviving are three sons, Will (Larysa) Juriga of Chicago, Greg Juriga of Charleston, and David (Van) Juriga of St. Louis; four grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Kay) Hanley of Mattoon; five nieces; and a nephew. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma (Hanley) Cutright; a brother, Kenneth Hanley; and two nephews.
Sharon was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Charleston and was the accompanist/organist until her illness in 2016. Previously, she was a member and accompanist/organist at the First Baptist Church in Charleston, for over 30 years. Sharon was a 1962 graduate of Charleston High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Eastern Illinois University in 1965 and her Master of Arts (piano) in 1966, also from EIU. She stayed at home and gave piano lessons while raising her three boys from 1967-1975, and taught K-12 Music at Westfield School District and Casey-Westfield School District from 1976-2011, for a grand total of 35 years. During her career, she produced over 37 high school musicals, many elementary school programs, music contests, and music appreciation lessons. She truly loved teaching music to children and will long be remembered by her many students for her sweet, happy, and kind way of teaching. She made a difference in the lives of all who met her.
After retiring, she spent the next seven years doing substitute teaching in area schools and played piano for Kermit’s Kove at Charleston High School. She also kept busy watching over her beloved Shelties. Sharon enjoyed helping others by playing for occasional funerals and weddings, loved to read, and was an avid photographer for her family. Her hobbies included scrapbooking and taking pictures. Her family meant the world to her and she will be greatly missed by them along with her many friends.
