Red met the love of his life, Margaret R. Baker, in London during the war. Margaret was born in England, moved to America where they married June 1, 1946 in Kankakee, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Andrews and a great grandchild, Logan Andrews.
He is survived by sons, Everett "Rett" Gerald Andrews, II of Fayetteville and Stuart Andrews and wife, Erin of York Haven, Pa.; a daughter, Suzanne Lilly and husband, Sam of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Blair Lilly and wife, Katie, Sara Webb and husband, Alex, Graeme Andrews and wife, Jennifer and Staci Franks and husband, Chris; 10 great grandchildren; and a special niece, Jennifer Blevins of Trenton, Ga.
Red was an Army artillery officer, participating in two major wars, World War II and the Korean War. In January of 1945, he was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and in 1952, Red evaded capture by North Korean and Chinese forces by hiding in the attic of a South Korean home. In recent years Red was honored by the Belgium and South Korean governments for his heroic service. During his 20 years in service he received numerous medals and commendations including the Silver Star, a Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, the United Nationals Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. After retiring from the Army, he served another 20 years of civil service at Fort Bragg.
Red Andrews was a true Gentleman, and a proud American and a hero to many. He would always say "It was my pleasure" when thanked for his service. His smile will be missed by all.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Friday, March 31, 2017 in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. John Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am to 10:30 am prior the service at the funeral home.
