William Dwain McCartney, Sr., was born in Weakley County, Tennessee, on August 30, 1937, to Fred and Lorene McCartney, a young couple who had been married just over a year prior.
Dwain grew up in Gibson County, where he attended local country schools in the Gann-Idlewild-Skullbone area.
Dwain married November 29, 1957, in Humboldt, Tennessee, to Sara Henley. They lived in Humboldt for around 12 years, where he worked at the Jones plant. Then, they relocated to northeastern Gibson County where he lived the rest of his life.
Dwain loved to attend auctions, and, after his retirement from Jones, continued farming and working on old farm equipment for resale.
He fought a hard fight against cancer after his diagnosis on November 12, 1998, and he won that fight, eventually becoming cancer free.
He battled COPD (emphysema) for the last years of his life, and, after a long hospital stay, passed away early on March 30, 2017. Two days later, he was laid to rest at Belew's Chapel Cemetery near his parents and grandparents.
Dwain was larger than life, a quiet man, but a strong man with a great love for his family and a dogged determination to live. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.
