Obituary, Washington (DC) Times, 12 Jul 1988:

Dr. Robert Latimer, Manassas physician

Dr. Robert A.W. Latimer, 62, a founder of the Manassas area's first emergency and obstetrical delivery service, died Sunday [10 Jul 1988] at his home in Manassas.

Dr. Latimer began a general practice in Manassas in the early 1950s, often delivering babies at home. In 1954, he and the late Dr. John Ringler opened the Manassas Medical Center, the only emergency and maternity care facility between Warrenton and Arlington at the time.

When Prince William Hospital opened in 1965, Dr. Latimer was its first chief of staff, serving two years in that position.

A native of Huntington, W.Va., he moved to Washington and graduated from Gonzaga High School. He did his undergraduate work at Villanova University in Pennsylvania and received his medical degree from Georgetown University.

Dr. Latimer served in the Navy as a physician aboard an aircraft carrier.

He was a founding member of the Prince William Medical Society, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners and on the staff of Anne Burg Manor nursing home.

A golfer, Civil War history buff and aviator, Dr. Latimer once owned a plane. He was a past member of the Flying Physicians Association.

He is survived by his wife, Lucie Knies Latimer; a son, Dr. Robert A.W. Latimer Jr. [III] of Manassas; two daughters, Donna Wittenauer of Manassas and Mrs. William Cloud of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother Edwin P. Latimer of Manassas; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Manassas Rescue Squad, the Prince William Cancer Society or Prince William Hospital.
