Daughter of Samuel and Olive (Rouse) Goodwin

from the Alma Enterprise, March 24, 1911, page 5:
"Olive Rosetta Goodwin was born at Royal Oak, Michigan, July 3, 1850. She was married to Elisha Ames Dec. 23, 1868, and they came to Kansas in April 1870, settling on Turkey Creek in Newbury. When the town of Newbury was started and a Methodist church organized, she was one of the first members. Like other pioneer women of Kansas, she went through many trials and hardships incident to such a life. In 1875 and '76, she lived in what is now Vera, afterwards moving to Kaw where she lived for many years in the home where she passed away on March 19. In her illness, she was attended by her daughters, Louise and Lillian, and her husband and her son, Howard, who gave her their most devoted attention. The funeral was largely attended by neighbors and a large circle of friends. The pall bearers were Messrs. McCleary, Mohler, Whitlock, Ramsey, Raymond, and Thompson, who were all old friends for more than a quarter of a century and, with the exception of one, for more than 35 years. Services were conducted by Rev. Foster at the Kaw Valley M.E. Church, and the interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Elisha W. Ames, her daughters, Louisa Abbott and Lillian Sweeney, her sons, Howard and Walter, the latter, living in California, was unable to be present on account of sickness in his family. The many friends of the family deeply sympathize with them in their bereavement."
