Barthol left Germany in 1859 and settled in Ottawa, Illinois as a blacksmith. He was a private in Company B 51 Regiment of Illinois Infantry Veteran Volunteers and was a prisoner of war in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He married Sophia Doepke between 1865 and 1868. He brought his family to Kansas in 1876 and bought 160 acres.
