One of the oldest Masons in Fulton County died on the morning of May 10, 1923, when death claimed Marcus H. Christie, a past master of Gloversville lodge, 429, F. & A. M, and patron of Cayadutta Chapter, 188 Order of the Eastern Star.

Marcus Christie died in the Nathan Littauer Hospital following an illness which had lasted since February. An injury to one of his hands, suffered while at work in the Daniel Hays Company plant, where he had been employed for 18 years, coupled with a stroke was the cause of death. He was 75 years old.

Marcus’s death is a deep sorrow not only to the members of his family and intimate friends but to the Masonic lodge and especially to the members of the Eastern Star. When the Gloversville Chapter. O. E. S was organized, Jan 12, 1899. Marcus was elected patron. He had been re-elected annually by unanimous vote because he was untiring in his efforts toward the chapter and always a friend of every member and a devoted booster for every Eastern Star project. During his long association with the Eastern Star, he had also been past assistant Grand Lecturer of this district of the order. As a Mason he was one of the oldest members of the Gloversville lodge. His interest in this organization was so great that in the entire 54 years of his office holding, he had never missed a single meeting until the middle of February when he fell ill.

Marcus was born in Gloversville on March 25, 1848, the son, of James and Julia Christie, and had always lived in Gloversville. He married Catherine Wessells in 1877 and they had 4 children. He was a member of the First Congregation Church.

Marcus was survived his daughter Mrs. Julia Holley of Oneonta, one son Carroll of Gloversville, and two brothers W. E. Christie of CA and Homer Christie, a member of the US Navy.

On Saturday the body was taken to the Masonic Temple where it laid in state during the day until the funeral service which was held the building. Masonic and O. E. S. ceremonies were carried out during the service. Burial was in the family plot in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
