Marie was the oldest of six children (only three lived to adulthood).

In 1902 her father, Charles Russell, disappeared for several months. He had left the family in Washington, DC while looking for employment. Desperate and in debt, her mother, Mary, contacted her family in Carson, VA for help. They were moved back to Virginia.

Ltr from Marie to Mama, 6/4/1906 - (Mother was working as a nurse in Danville, VA; believe the three children were with relatives in Richmond, VA) - states that Florence and Howard miss her. They all don't want to go to the Orphanage. She wants to go live with the rich lady from church (story is that a rich lady from their church took a liking to Marie and her red hair - offered to adopt her, but Marie's mother refused.)

Notes from her sister, Florence Russell - 1908, Marie was the oldest child, quiet and obedient, very precise, a regular old maid at the age of 13 and so busy with her school and help them monitor at home that she had no time for Florence and Howard. She had golden red hair which had a glorious natural curl, was inclined to be stout, and when relaxing, unconsciously sucked her thumb.

Notes from Florence Norris - 1912 - Marie moved to live with their Uncle Junius and Aunt Mabel's after her mother demanded her first paycheck be turned over to her.

Ltr. from Marie in San Antonio, TX to her brother Howard, 3/28/1919 - asked him about Navy life. She wrote of traveling and meeting a Frenchman, Leon Beaudin.

April 1920 - Marie was working on a newspaper staff - the Excelerator.

1925 - their father, Charles Russell, resurfaces in Virginia, living with his daughter from his first marriage. He has a reunion with Mary, his ex-wife by then, and two of his adult children. I find no evidence that Marie and Leon were there for the reunion.

1928 - Florence Norris sent an ad to Detective Story Magazine inquiring about Marie's whereabouts. A past coworker read the mag and sent two contacts for her to send letters to.

10/19/1948 - Marie and Leon both worked in Oakland, CA.

In the 1960's Marie and Leon did visit her Mother, sister, and brother in Virginia.

Ltr from Marie to Florence, Sept 1978 - quit smoking due to breathing difficulty (after 40 years).
