Andrew J. "Andy'' Balazs Sr. "A great man is one who leaves others at a loss after he is gone". Andy Balazs passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family he cared for, nurtured, guided, and loved on April 2, 2017, a day after celebrating his 88th birthday. His big heart and infectious sense of humor touched the lives of all he met.
He fought for his country with honor in the Korean War and returning home with shrapnel still in him he could then predict rain. His skilled hands could fix, mend or build anything, as well as create Hungarian gourmet meals that will be missed by the many people he has fed. As a founder of North East Football League, he touched the lives of thousands of young men, who he coached or influenced through football fundamentals, sportsmanship & Christian values. He believed that hard work built character, and that simple men could create great things if only they work hard enough, throughout his life he proved this to be true.
A faithful and loving husband of 61 years to Mary Jane (nee Whitely) Balazs. An amazing father to Andy Jr., Tommy, Mary Jo (Thomas) Wiley, Suszie (Joe) Picozzi and Billy Balazs. A friend to his former daughter-in-law's Cathy, Jami, and Ronda Balazs. A dedicated "Papa" to Andy III (Ashley), Josephine and Elizabeth Balazs, Kristin and Kara Wiley, Nikki Picozzi, Max Balazs, Sammie Picozzi, Taylor, Morgan, Margo, and Marissa Balazs and Great Papa to Scarlett Balazs.
A loving son to the late Andrew and Mary (nee Popp), and big brother to Mary Whitley, the late Julius, Steve, John and Joseph Balazs. Brother-in-law to Peg and Don Warden, Joe and Carrie Whitely, Cathy and Dean Peters, Phyllis and Lona Balazs, and Jim Whitely. Uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. pm on Friday April 7, 2017 at Brickman Bros. Funeral Home, 37433 Euclid Ave (Willoughby).
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Divine Word Catholic Church, 8100 Eagle Rd., Kirtland. Interment All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Ohio Living Hospice, 38879 Mentor Ave., Ste A, Willoughby.
