“Funeral of B. F. McPherson To Be Held At Home With Burial in Elmwood”
“B.F. McPherson, founder of Hood-McPherson Furniture Company, died at St. Anthony’s Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla., early Saturday morning. Mr. McPherson who had been seriously ill several weeks had gone to Florida with his wife to recuperate where his condition became suddenly serious, calling his sons, James, George, and Frank to his bedside earlier in the week.
Mr. McPherson was born in Southern Georgia in 1868 and came to Birmingham 20 years later to become actively engaged in the furniture business. In 1912 Hood-McPherson’s began business. In 1912, he entered into partnership with the late James Hood, opening a store in Ensley. In 1917, Mr. McPherson purchased the Hood interest and moved to a larger building. In 1932, Hood-McPherson’s began business in Birmingham in the former location of Hood-Wheeler. Both stores have been under active management of three sons the past five years.
Mr. McPherson had spent his life actively engaged in civic affairs and building of his business. He was recognized throughout the country for his foresight and progressiveness. He was a member of the F. & A. M. Florida Lodge, Pratt City, and the Ensley Commandry of Knights Templar.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lazinka Perkins McPherson; three sons, James, George, and Frank; and two daughters, Mrs. Claude Edwards and Mrs. Harry Elliot, all of Birmingham; and one brother, Marshall McPherson.
The body will arrive in Birmingham late Sunday evening in charge of Echols and Angwin.
Funeral services will be held at the home, 2714 Ensley Avenue, burial in Elmwood Cemetery Monday, the hour to be announced. Active pallbearers will be: T.J. Carter, O.M. Caldwell, Dr. J. M. Garlington, Dr. E.D. Ray, J.A. Dupey, D.W. Dobbins, A.W. Smith, and J.H. Perkins.”
