Death of Former Resident
Mrs. Sophia Smith Passes Away Friday at Home at San Jose
Mrs. Sophia Smith, a former resident of Minonk, died on Friday morning at 11:15 at her home at San Jose, following a five and one-half month sickness of yellow jaundice and hardening of the liver.
The deceased was born in Neischau [Neuschoo], Ostfriesland, Germany, on April 14, 1843, thus her age at death being 77 years and 9 months.
She was married in Germany to Frederick Cornelius Smith, and in 1868 came to Glouchester county, New Jersey, and resided there two years, later coming to San Jose, then to Minonk for two years, then back to San Jose in 1870, where she and her family had resided since. June 10, 1901, her husband died, and after his death she continued to make her residence at San Jose. To this union were born eight children, four of whom, Mrs. Mary Van Beuning, Mrs. Fredericka Crafton and Miss Rosa Smith and Harmon A. Smith, preceded her in death. The surviving children are Commel F. Smith of Bloomington, Jacob F. Smith, John D. Smith and Roscoe Smith, and one foster daughter, Daisy Smith, of San Jose. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Eimka Kohlman, of Danforth, and eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the residence at San Jose on Monday afternoon and then at the Sale M.E. church, conducted by Dr E.H. Mealder, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev E.L. To[?] of Cerro Gordo and Rev C.H. Davis of San Jose. Burial was made at Green Hill cemetery.
