John Harrison Key, 91, of Arpelar, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at McAlester Regional Health Center. Born Nov. 23, 1915, in Shawnee, he was the son of John W. and Willie May (Scott) Key. He married Johnnie Sain of Farris on June 22, 1937, in Lane, and they began a life of travel and adventure. He began his work in construction on the Lake Texoma Dam. In 1948 the Key family moved to Venezuela where he worked as the foreman over building refineries and oil tanks until 1963. Upon his return to the states, he was a welding inspector for the state of Oklahoma. He retired in 1979 and the Keys settled in Arpelar and he went to work for the Roger Key Equipment Company over lumber and tinhorn sales for another 15 years. On his 80th birthday, he retired for good to the ranch and his garden. His wife preceded him in death on May 15, 2006. He was a charter member of the Arpelar First Baptist Church and was also the first deacon of the church. Survivors include two daughters, Kaye and Charles Kerley, of McAlester, and Becky and Howard Duren, of Tulsa; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John Thomas and Charlotte Key, Lynnwood, Wash., and Roger Key, of McAlester. Also, 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Wilsie, of Romulus; Pat Key, of Tulsa, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leroy Key, and three sisters, Mozelle Bowerman, Leota Morton and Betty Ledbetter. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with Charles Kerley and Larry Brinkley officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Greg Key, Lynn Key, Kevin Connor, Mike Miller, Howard Duren and Bernie Atteberry. Honorary pallbearers will be Shelly Hogan, Jim Miller, Gary Fugitt, Charlie Battles, Rusty Martin, A. W. Wilmoth and Ross Selman.
