Jim left Loras College in Dubuque, IA and entered service in the US Army on December 8, 1942, arrived in Europe in June 1944, and was only 22 years old when he was Killed in Action in Germany on September 28 of 1944.

He was serving with the U. S. 1st Army, 3rd Armored Division, 36th Infantry Regiment, Company C(?L).
