He grew up and attended school in Jacksonville. Following high school, where he was the valedictorian, he then attended Lon Morris Junior College and transferred to Texas A&M, receiving a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering in 1952. He then served in the United States Army Corp of Engineers, based in the Philippines. During his time in the Philippines, he met, and later married Virginia Escueta. They made their home in Texas and Pete worked for the highway department, retiring in 1993. He also served as the City Engineer in Jacksonville. He then was the co-owner of two engineering companies, Bro-Mac and Cal-Mac. His last position was with the Orthopedic Brace Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Shirley Burgess and he is survived by his wife, Dolores McGaughey of Tyler; his three children, Gary, and his wife, Jann McGaughey of Jacksonville, Barbara, and her husband Greg Morgan of Tyler, Neal, and his wife, Melinda McGaughey of Longview, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the First Christian Church, 1920 Beaumont St., Jacksonville; with visitation one hour prior to the service. Private interment to follow.
