Paul is the son of Ernest Labute and Madeleine Renaud. Prior to 1955 he was studying theology at St Joseph's in Ottawa and was designated an O.M.I. However, after his father died in 1955 he left and went on to marry Joan Ethel Cox in 1958. In 1967 he and Joan were divorced and he went on to marry a second time in 1983 to Bernice Lefave.
