JONESVILLE - Charles L. Armstrong, son of the late Roy and Marie Belk Armstrong, was born in Rutherford County on April 9, 1923. Charles Armstrong passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008. He grew up happily at The Children' s Home in Winston-Salem. Upon graduating from Reynolds High School and leaving The Children's Home, Charles served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army anti-aircraft artillery searchlight battalion. After an honorable discharge from the military, Charles worked with Western-Electric (AT&T) and later retired from the company while in Atlanta Ga. Upon retirement, Charles and his wife moved to the farm of his dear loved ones, Jim and Mary Bell Armstrong in Wilkes County. Charles married Lucy McKaughan on Feb. 25, 1949, and had two children, Merry and Jim. Charles was an active and energetic father, grandfather and friend until he passed away. His children and grandchildren consider him their best friend. Charles enthusiastically cared for his farm animals and pigeons and encouraged others to do the same. Charles was dedicated to his friends and the memory of his life at The Children' s Home. Charles has been a faithful servant of the Lord during his life and a member of Yadkinville Church of Christ for the past 20 years. He loved his church family as much as they loved him. In addition, Charles was a 50-year member of the Piedmont-Pioneer Lodge 685 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Winston-Salem. He was a noble member of the Elkin-Jonesville Shriner Club. Charles L. Armstrong was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite of the Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A. Those preceding him in death include his parents, Roy and Marie Belk Armstrong; his brother, Theron Armstrong; and parent-like friends, Jim and Mary Bell Armstrong. Charles Armstrong is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lucy Armstrong. In addition, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Merry and Stephen Lowe of Wilkes County; and his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Shaliah Armstrong of Auburn, Ala. Also surviving are his grandson, Adam Lowe, and wife Mecca of Alabama; and granddaughters Jami Armstrong of Elkin and Sarah Armstrong of Auburn, Ala.; as well as his stepgrandaughter, Stephanie L. Towe, and family of South Carolina. Others surviving include his dear brother-in-law, Richard McKaughn (Margie); sister-in-law Jean Rachel; and many loving nieces and nephews. The funeral services for Mr. Armstrong will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Feb. 23, at Woosley Chapel, on the campus of The Children' s Home, 1001 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem. The family will receive visitors from 12:30 to 2 p.m. today, Feb. 23, at The Children' s Home. Graveside services will follow at Saints' Delight Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Linville Road (Sedge Garden community), Winston-Salem. The family wishes to thank "Charlie's Angels" at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit of Forsyth Medical Center that gave him such loving care during the last days of his life. The family requests that memorials be made to The Children' s Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. The funeral services for Mr. Armstrong will be conducted by Spencer Funeral Home of Mount Airy.
