Beep-Beep was a very special man. He, and his sister, Elsie Matherne, were family in every way that counted to us; though we did not share the same blood.

Born the son of Oscar & Sophie Cooper, Oscar Cooper lived a wild and difficult early adulthood that resulted in failed marriages and an addiction to the bottle.

Finding inner strength, God, and Alcoholic's Anonymous, Oscar Cooper survived and conquered his own demons and lived to be an inspiration and guide to many others in his 30+ years of sobriety.

When I knew him, he was a funny, gentle man with soft brown eyes and the solid, quiet demeanor of a peaceful soul. He offered wisdom and insights, but was never preachy. My siblings and I looked to him as a surrogate grandfather and he - never having children or grandchildren of his own - loved us as if we were his own flesh and blood.

He loved to fish and spend time visiting with his sister, who lived in the house next to the camper that he inhabited. He didn't require much from life...he was centered and at peace in a way many of us could only ever hope to be.

I will never forget his huge heart, full of so much love to share, his wise counsel, or the knowledge of all the many people he helped and inspired through A.A. It was a rare gift to have him as part of our lives, and each of us is grateful for the blessing.
