Charles O. Turner, 87, a longtime Lake Mohegan resident, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2011. Born on February 22, 1924, in Peekskill, NY, son of the late Kenneth & Bessie (nee Baisley) Turner.
Charles served his country during World War II, enlisting on September 24, 1942 in the United States Army Air Corp with the 8th Air Force 338th Bomber Squadron. He was awarded several medals; the most prestigious of awards that he received was the Distinguish Flying Cross, which is America's oldest military aviation award, given to one who exemplified outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to the call of duty. Charles was honorable discharged on June 3, 1945. And three weeks later on June 24th in Peekskill, NY, he married Gladys E. Fyler, who now survives him at home.
Along with his loving wife of 66 years of marriage, his two sons survive him: Richard Turner and his wife Pat and Allen Turner; Charles is also survived by his two granddaughters Kim Robertson and Kelly Freve; and also his two great-grandsons Trevor Robertson and Brendan Duguay.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 6th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at the E.O. Curry Funeral Home, Peekskill, where a funeral service will be held 12:00 pm, followed by entombment and military honors at the Rose Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum, Putnam Valley, NY.
