Staff Sergeant Sanford Thomas Allen was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Allen served our country until May 9th, 1968 in Hua Nghia, South Vietnam. He was 39 years old and was not married. It was reported that Sanford died from artillery fire. His body was recovered. SSG Allen is on panel 57E, line 013 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 17 years with Tours in Vietnam and Korea.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Sanford T Allen of Route 2, Smithfield, was killed in action in Vietnam according to an announcement issued Wednesday by the Defense Department. The body is being sent to Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield. The funeral arrangements are incomplete, but full military rites are planned and internment will follow in Oakland Heights Cemetery. Sergeant Allen was in the news in December, when members of his family were informed that he had been wounded the previous month in action in Vietnam. He was a member of a tank battalion when he was wounded on November 29 by antitank fire from a Viet Cong tank. At that time he was struck by metal fragments from an exploding projectile. His wounds were described as being in the face, the right ear and on the right hand, and he was reported at that time in satisfactory condition. No details have been received by his family about his being killed. The 37 year old soldier was in the military service for 17 years. He had served in Korea and Vietnam for about nine months. Survivors include his mother; Mrs Ora Page, his sister, Mrs Leon Olive, and two daughters, Linda and Carol Allen.

A funeral with full Military Honors was held for US Army Sergeant Sanford Thomas Allen of Route 9, Smithfield, Sunday afternoon at 3pm at Underwood Funeral Home A Chaplain from Fort Bragg was assisted by the Reverend C.Coats. Internment with full military rites followed in Oakland Heights Cemetery. Sergeant Allen was killed in action May 9 in the vicinity of Cu Chi, Vietnam. He was a 17-Year Veteran of the US Army. He was a member of a the 34th Armored Regiment. Sergeant Allen, who was 37 years of age, was a holder of the Purple Heart Medal received for wounds sustained on November 29. He is survived by his Mother, Mrs Ora Page of Route 3, Smithfield, two daughters, Misses Linda and Carol Allen, both of Selma, three brothers; James L Allen of Alexandria, Va. William R Allen of New Orleans, La, and Carl Allen of Chesapeake, Va; two sisters, Mrs Mable E Blackburn of New Newport News, Va, and Mrs Mildred Olive of Route 2, Smithfield. He was the son of Mr James Lloyd Allen and Mrs Ora Eason Allen of Smithfield, North Carolina. Father to Linda and Carol Allen, both of Selma, three brothers; James, William, and Carl; brother to Mable and Mrs Mildred.

He served with Alpha Company, 34th Armored Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal(s) and the Good Conduct Medal(s).
