Rebecca Ashbrook Lewis went home to join her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 15, 2009.Rebecca Evangeline Ashbrook was born August 10, 1917, to Frank and Nora Ashbrook at Boynton , OK , the second of six children. She attended high school at Salina , OK , graduating in May 1934. In 1938 Rebecca received a Bachelor of Science degree from Central State in Edmond , Oklahoma , and in 1962 she earned a Master of Science degree from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater . Rebecca Ashbrook was wed to Russell Lewis on August 27, 1938, in Tulsa . Both Rebecca and Russell were career educators, he as a coach and superintendent of schools and she as a secondary mathematics teacher. Rebecca taught school for 31 years, the last 20 of which were at Rush Springs , OK. She had a deep and abiding love for learning and sharing her knowledge with her young students. Rebecca considered her work a joyous ìcallingî which led her to touch the lives of generations of young men and women. Russell Lewis died in August 1987 at Rush Springs . Rebecca moved to Norman in July, 1991, where she continued her work with young people by serving as a fraternity house mother, teaching Sunday school and tutoring local students in English and math.Rebecca is survived by her two daughters, Judith Hix and husband Max of Norman; Kathy Berry and husband Dan of Del Mar, CA.; four grandchildren, Stephanie Hix of Brentwood, TN, Lindsey Herndon of Dallas, TX, Micah Herndon, and wife Midori, of Hawaii, and Alexandra Berry of Del Mar; one great grandson, Nicholas Vellanti, of Brentwood, two sisters, Mary Lou Dietz of Tahlequah, OK, and Betty Karr of Morgantown, WV, and many nieces and nephews. Rebecca trusted in Jesus as her Savior at an early age and considered Him to be the loadstone of her life. She was a member of The First Baptist Church of Rush Springs, OK, and Bethel Baptist Church in Norman , OK . Rebecca's family acknowledges her as their religious leader and teacher, and the one who is responsible for their successes in life. The family salutes Rebecca Ashbrook Lewis for a life well lived. A life distinguished by honest and honorable hard work, love and generosity to family, charity, courage, honor, and a strong unwavering faith in God. Rebecca will be missed, but never forgotten. Her family has planned funeral services for Saturday 3rd October, 2009, at 2 P.M. at the Southern Baptist Church of Rush Springs, Oklahoma , with the Reverend Elmer Whitehead officiating. Funeral Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma. The Burial Service will be at the Rush Springs Cemetery. Provided by Shirley Carson Catlin.
