Brother Mattus was a long time English, Spanish and religion teacher for Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons school for many years.

SCHENECTADY Brother Joseph Francis Mattus C.F.C., 63, of Schenectady, passed away unexpectedly on June 16, 2007 at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady. Born in Schenec-tady on March 24, 1944, he was the son of the late Anthony and Ann Prohaska Mattus. He was raised and educated in Schenectady, graduating from Bishop Gibbons High School. He went on to earn his B.A. from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. and later earned his M.A. in religious education from St. Michael's College, Vt. Brother Joseph was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Schenectady. He had an extensive career as a counselor and teacher of English, Spanish and Religion. He was a devoted educator in many schools including Sacred Heart Grammar School in N.Y.C., St. Joseph's Academy Community School, Antigua, West Indies, Bishop Hendricken High School, War-wick, R.I., Rice Community High School, N.Y.C., Bishop Kearney High School, Rochester, N.Y., Iona College Community & Ministry, New Rochelle, N.Y., Catholic Memorial High School, West Roxbury, Mass. and returning to Schenectady for Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School. Brother Joseph is affectionately remembered by his family and colleagues as a man with a heart as big as himself. He was also a track and debate coach. Survivors include his siblings, Bernard Mattus of Gansevoort and Benedict Mattus of Troy, Michigan, and Sister Elizabeth Ann Mattus, R.S.M., of Albany; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of brother colleagues and friends. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by a sister, Patricia Mattus. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 600 State St., Schenectady. Interment will be in West Park, N.Y. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School, 2600 Albany St., Schenectady, NY 12304.
