Gordon Kenneth (Grumpy) Ulrich, 88, of Boise, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at the Idaho Veterans Home in Pocatello surrounded by family and friends.

Gordon was born in Cathay, North Dakota in 1929 to Gordon Wilson Ulrich and Hilda Donker. He attended high school in Nebraska and graduated in 1946. During his time in high school, he became a Journeyman Butcher.

After graduating from high school, Gordon joined the United States Army Air Corp. where he moved up the ranks and retired from The United States Air Force. He served his country with honor for 29 years. During his time with the military, he married the love of his life Maxine Withrow Ulrich, to whom he was married to for 46 wonderful years. Gordon also served several tours of duty as an Electronics Specialist around the world, including Korea, Africa, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, and Guam. During his tour in Vietnam, he earned a Bronze Star for his heroic efforts.

After retiring from the Military, he returned to Boise where he worked for the family business, Kool Metal, as a Shop Forman. He eventually moved on from the family business to once again serve those in need. He began working as a cook and head baker for the Elks Hospital. When he finally retired from his service to other, he once again found himself wanting to help others and decided to volunteer for the Ada County Court House, until his health forced him to retire.

Gordon was a multifaceted man. When not working and raising his family, he also found time to be part of many great organizations. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Order where he attained his 32 degree. He was also a member of the The York Rite and El Korah Shriners. If that wasn't enough, Gordon was also Past Worthy Grand Patron of Amaranth, and Treasurer Emeritus for the Order of the Eastern Star, Adah Chapter #8 in Boise. Finally, he was also a member of American Legion, John Regan Post #2, and Disabled Vets of America.

One thing we will never forget about Gordon was the following quite: “Oh, dammit, give it here!!” That always brought a smile to the family. He was loved more than words could ever express and will remain with all of those he ever met. One last memory that just sums up what made Gordon.. Gordon. His love of the Chinese Buffet crab legs and peel and eat shrimp. We love you and you will continually remain a guiding light for us in the dark parts of the world. He was a true patriot, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

Gordon is survived by his daughter, Judith Gill (Chuck Gill, Chief USN deceased); son, Gordon (Bruce) Ulrich and daughter in-law Daveta Ulrich; 6 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Maxine, father Gordon W. Ulrich, mother Hilda Ulrich and sister Cleone Pierce.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner s Hospital for Children, or Idaho Veterans Home. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of the people aiding them in this time.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017, at 11 am at Summers Funeral Home, 3629 E Ustick Rd., Meridian, Idaho 83646. A graveside service will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery, 9600 Hill Rd., Boise ID 83714, A reception for Gordon “Grumpy” Ulrich will be held following the graveside ceremony.
