During the Civil War, he was made Colonel of the Forty Sixth Regiment of New York Militia, and was made commandant of Camp Huntington in Rome.
It was from here that the 117th and 146th Regiments of New York Infantry were housed and drilled and made ready for their service in the Civil War.
He therefore had a great influence on the officers and men of these famous regiments.
Rome cemetery records show he is buried in Section D Grave 23.
A careful search of the grave location has failed to find a marker in the
Armstrong family plot.
