He was at the siege of Vicksburg and wounded in battle on three different occasions. The first was at Vicksburg Mississippi on 29 Dec. 1862, the second at Resaca Georgia on 2 May 1864 and the third near Dallas Georgia 29 May 1864. During his service in the Civil War he decided to change the spelling of his name from Mains to Means.
