Vietnam War Veteran
James H. Allen, 68, of Hamel, Ill., died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in Saint Louis, Mo.
He was born March 16, 1943, in Arroyo Grande, Calif., the son of Kenneth and Gwendolyn (Silva) Allen.
On April 6, 1981, he married Patricia A. "Pat" Allen (Harris), who survives in Hamel.
He was a VFW Life Member, a member of Worden American Legion and Air Stream Club; and a board member of Illinois Route 66 Association.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on October 21, 1963 and served with Air Force Band for two years. He served the rest of his career in the administration field. He served in Vietnam, Italy, Washington state, Greece, Germany, Tennessee and Monterey, Calif. While in Vietnam, he worked with an orphanage teaching English to the children. He retired as a master sergeant in July 1988, three months shy of 25 years of service. After retirement, he typeset over 30 technical books in the computer and electrical engineering and mathematical fields.
He owned and operated the former Scotties Tavern, now known as Weezy's, in Hamel. He worked very hard to have Scotties Tavern named to the Route 66 Historical Site List as a continually operating business.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Eric J. Allen, of Spokane, Wash., Christopher Allen, of Tujunga, Calif., Scott T. (Angela) Johnson, of Edwardsville, Ill., and Shawn M. Johnson, of Hollywood Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Ann Michelle Allen, of Long Beach, Calif. and Carrie D. (fiance David Berry) Stevens, of Belleville, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth B. Allen; his mother, Gwendolyn M. Allen (Silva) and one brother, Larry K. Allen.
Arrangements are being handled by Dauderman Mortuary, 102 East State Street in Hamel.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22 at Dauderman Mortuary. Memorial funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Dauderman Mortuary. Everyone is invited to continue in the celebration of Jim's life at Weezy's after the services at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Shriner's Hospital for Children.
