Katherine C. Reeside, 92, of Asheville, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, after a brief illness. She was a resident of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement community. Born on July 6, 1911, in Danville, Va., to Edward M. and Jule W. Cabaniss, Mrs. Reeside was raised in Jersey City, N. J., and New York City. After graduating from Gunston Hall Junior College in Washington, D.C., she founded a travel agency in New York that she operated until World War II.

After the war, she and her husband, Harmer Reeside, relocated to Washington and later Chevy Chase, Md., where she lived until moving to Asheville in December 1999. She resumed her career as a travel agent after the war and co-founded VanSlycke and Reeside Travel Associates in Washington, which is still in operation.

In addition to her career in the travel business, Mrs. Reeside was active as a volunteer at the Washington National Cathedral. She also served on the boards of the Florence Crittenden Home and Columbia Hospital for Women. Her great loves were her family and friends, traveling, golfing and gardening.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harmer Reeside, in 1978. She is survived by her daughter, Julie M. Johnson, and her husband, the Tr. Rev. Robert H. Johnson, Episcopal Bishop of Western North Carolina. She is also survived by two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Robert H. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Pam, and their children, Robert III and Eleanor Elisabeth of Charlotte, and Katharine Johnson Guerrant, her husband, Jeffrey L. Guerrant, and their children, Julia, Jeffrey Jr. and Benjamin. The Guerrants reside in West Point, Va.

A celebration of Mrs. Reeside's life will be led by the Rev. Morgan Gardner at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Giles Chapel at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement community. She will be interred at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington.

Her Deerfield friends and the Deerfield staff made her last years joyful and comfortable. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Deerfield Residency Fund, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803 to support those residents with financial needs. Morris Funeral Home is assisting the family.
