Donnie grew up on the family farm near Monti, Buchanan County, Iowa. He attended Monti, Buchanan County, IA Consolidated School where he played basketball for the 4-H Teams. He later attended High School in either or both Coggon/Quasqueton, Ia.
His Cedar Rapids, IA Gazette Obituary read:
"DONALD C. HEFFERNEN. 35, former Coggon (Iowa) resident, died Monday in his home at Parker, Colo. ....
He was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Delaware County.
He operated a used car dealership in Parker at the time of his death.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Joyce, are two sons, Thomas of Parker, Colo., and Donald of Coggon; one stepson, Tim Whitehurst of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Sheila and Patricia, both of Coggon; one stepdaughter, Tammy Whitehurst of Parker; his mother, Mrs. Richard Heffernen of Quasqueton; one sister, Mrs. Harold Kuebler of Altamount, Ill.; three brothers, Richard of Manchester, John of Coggon and Virgil of Cherokee.
Services: Thursday, 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Monti (Iowa). Burial: St. Mary's Cemetery in Masonville (Iowa). A wake service will be held at 8 tonight at Mason-Harris' in Quasqueton (Iowa)."
