William Nelson Lankey served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the WWI Sinai and Palestine Campaign from the 14th of November 1915 to the 1st of February 1919 and was abroad for two years and 335 days. He was discharged on the grounds of no longer being physically fit to serve after he contracted malaria in the Jordan Valley during 1918 and was subsequently admitted to hospital in Cairo.

His posting overseas began when he disembarked in Suez, Egypt, on the 10 April 1916 where he was posted to the training regiment, and then on the 3rd of July 1916 he was transferred to the Wellington Mounted Rifle Brigade and spent his military time in the areas of Cairo, Port Said, Suez, Kantara, Abbassia, Moascar, Ismailia, Gaza, and Heliopolis.

When William enlisted at the age of 39 in the NZEF he was living in Pongoroa, New Zealand and working as a labourer for J.T Piper. His description on enlistment is 5 feet 11 inches tall, of fair complexion with brown hair and blue eyes.

In the Next of Kin section on his WWII History Sheet, William Nelson Lankey has named Mrs Sarah Mead nee Anderson of Main St, Pahiatua, who he identifies as his sister. This may indicate that after his mother's death when he was five years old he grew up with the Anderson family.

In 1961 the army received notification of his death, and his next of kin was his nephew and namesake Mr Nelson William Lankey of 5 Ellison Street, Napier.
