Edward Bert Adkins, Jr., 81, passed away at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Mr. Adkins was born on Tuesday, October 22, 1935, in the four-family flat located at 2119 E. College Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. He was the son of the late Edward Bert and Ethel Josephine (Hammer) Adkins Sr.

Growing up in the College Hill neighborhood of North City, St. Louis, his memories included playing soccer at Fairground and O'Fallon Parks, sledding on Art Hill, helping his father at his appliance store on West Florissant, and working as a caddy at several golf courses. Mr. Adkins graduated from Beaumont High School in June 1953. Always an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, he was happy that he was able to attend Cardinal games at Sportsman Park, Busch Stadium and Busch Stadium II.

From June 1955 through June 1959, Mr. Adkins served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Benner, and he would tell you that traveling to Australia and Newport, Rhode Island, were his favorite locations.

In 1965, Mr. Adkins opened and operated Adkins Ornamental Iron in Godfrey, Illinois. Still to this day some of his detailed ironwork can be seen around the Godfrey area. He was a 27 year member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 562, retiring from Anheuser-Busch Brewery in 1996.

Mr. Adkins was married, father of four and grandfather of five. Very rarely did he miss any game or activity that involved his children or grandchildren. He loved holidays, especially Christmas and Fourth of July, but his favorite was family vacations where he usually was the first one to cannonball into the hotel pool.

Preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Emma Jean Terneus and Barbara Anne Gillihan, and half-brother, Russell Adkins.

Per the family's request, his body was donated to Washington University in St. Louis.

He will be missed every single day.
