Edgar was born in Manhattan, N.Y., where he graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1940. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, on D-Day as part of the 29th Division, 175th Infantry. He fought in Isigny, Saint-Lo Falise Gap and the Battle for Brest, France, and later, as part of the 324th M.P.'s. He recived the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, the French Croix-de-Guerre Good Conduct medal, Combat Infantryman badge, Sharpshooter badge and the World War II Victory medal.
He was a communicant of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Daphne, Ala., and was a lifetime 4th degree member of The Knights of Columbus, Council #2573 Bay of the Holy Spirit Assembly, Daphne/Fairhope, Ala. He was voted Knight of the Year 1978, Council #1358, Waco, Texas. He was a member of the 29th Division Association, Texas Post #28 and Empire Post #101, NY state and VFW Post #1500/AL Life member and member of American Legion Post $1983.
Edgar worked at General Motors in Tarrytown, N.Y., and Sonotone/Marathon Battery in Cold Spring, N.Y., and in Waco, Texas, before retiring in 1984. He also worked for the Peekskill Dude Ranch in N.Y., as a ski school instructor, life guard and bartender throughout the 60s. In later years, he enjoyed fishing, cooking, ceramics and watching football on TV.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Valerie Calabrese.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth, whom he married in 1942; his children, Jo Ann Kelly and husband, Peter, of Montrose, N.Y., Gary Manoliu and wife, Connie, of Montgomery, Ala., and Joseph Manoliu, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Ileana Paulson and husband, Charles, of Montrose, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews; and two cousins.
