George Ellett Lawrence, age 89, of Greenwood, Mississippi, passed away on Tuesday, April 25th, 2017 at his residence. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 27th, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, with visitation beginning at 12 p.m., in the church parlor. Dr. Rusty Douglas will officiate the services.

Mr. Lawrence was born on July 22nd, 1927 to the late George Malcolm and Earle Pinkerton Lawrence in Grenada, Mississippi. He grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and enlisted in the Navy under the V-5 program upon completing high school. Ellett later graduated from Ole Miss in 1949 with a BA degree in Journalism, moved to Greenwood, and began working as a sales representative for his two uncles in the family business.

He became Chairman of Lawrence Printing Company in 1971 and was also Past President of the Kiwanis Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Greenwood Country Club, as well as serving on the boards of Pillow Academy and Golden Age Nursing Home. Additionally, Mr. Lawrence received Jaycee Outstanding Young Man of the Year, the Leflore County Outstanding Citizen Award, and was inducted into the Greenwood-Leflore Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. Ellett was also an active and dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session, and Church Treasurer. He was also a member of the Irvine Memorial Sunday School class and the Men’s Friday Morning Bible Study.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Connie Parker Lawrence; two daughters, Ann (George) Ellis and Kay Hull, both of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Alan Ellis, Adam Ellis, Drew (Blair) Hull, and Ellen Hull, and a great grandson, Pittman Ellis.
