SHREVEPORT, LA - Services for Cecil Emmitt Bland, Jr., 85, will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 12, 2007 at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dave Fortuna and Rev. Beth Tu'uta of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Stoner Avenue. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home, and 9:00 a.m. Monday morning prior to the service at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church.

Cecil was born October 30, 1921 and passed away Thursday, February 8, 2007 at LifeCare/Pierremont after a lengthy illness. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Centenary College where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and the first Centenary College Choir. Cecil acted in plays at Centenary and later in Community Theater in Shreveport. He married Nannie McKinney Norris in 1942 and soon was drafted into the Army advancing to First Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict.

He began his broadcasting career working for KWKH before World War II and KTBS afterward. Cecil announced for the Louisiana Hayride in 1947-49. In 1952 he was Program Director and Weatherman at the new television station, KTHV, in Little Rock, AR. In 1957, he started as Station Manager at KIKS in Sulphur, LA. In 1965 Cecil returned to Shreveport to serve as Office Manager at the Louisiana Conference Office of the United Methodist Church. Cecil managed the 1000 Club that sponsors new churches and expansions for many years and was consecrated as a Lay Person. Cecil taught the Freeman Fellowship Class at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church for 40 years. He was a constant Bible scholar, and a man of strong faith.

Cecil is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nannie Norris Bland of Shreveport, LA; daughters, Cecilia Bland of New Orleans, LA and Donna Bland Berry of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Brian L. Berry, Marlene K. Giessen, Rachel M. Giessen and Michael Craig Berry; and great grandchildren, Jacob and Bailey Berry.

The family acknowledges the staff at LifeCare/Pierremont, Willis-Knighton Pierremont, Pierremont HealthCare Center and Meadowview Healthcare and Rehab in Minden, LA for the professional and loving care shown to Cecil.
