Norris Stanwood "Deacon" Adams

Resident Of Walnut Creek & Formerly of Antioch

Norris passed in Alamo, CA, on April 17, 2017, at 102 years. He was born on January 28, 1915, in Cape Elizabeth, ME. His father, Caleb, married Norris's mother, Ethel Miller, in 1906. Norris had four brothers, and one sister, all of whom pre-deceased him. Norris, known to many by his nickname "Deacon," graduated from Cape Elizabeth High in 1933 during the depression. After working various jobs, including some through the WPA created by the Roosevelt Administration, he attended the University of Maine and graduated with a degree in economics in 1940. He taught about a year and a half, then joined the Navy in 1942, serving as a lieutenant in the Caribbean Sea, before transferring to the Naval Air Station in Alameda, CA. There, he met Janet Meredith, a junior officer he supervised. They married in 1945 and remained so over 65 years, until Janet's death on April 1, 2011. After the war, Norris and Janet moved to Antioch, CA, where they lived 1946 to 1994, before moving to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, CA. They had two sons Bruce (Liliana) and Robert (Michael-Laurie). Norris, a career educator, taught and served as a counselor at Antioch High School from 1947-1979. As a young teacher, he supplemented his income by working in the local factories, delivering mail part-time, and teaching adult education classes at night. Norris loved his work as an educator and, over the years, consistently surprised former students with his recall of who they were, their family and friends, and their activities. He truly cared about those he taught and counseled. Upon retirement, Norris remained active: He served on the local school board and participated in Brown Bag. He helped the elderly with tax preparation, and learned how to reupholster furniture. He and Janet also enjoyed frequent visits to their cabin in Arnold, CA, and took several cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal. Per Norris's request, there are no services planned. The family wishes to express its appreciation to the staff at Carlton Senior Living and at Hospice East Bay for the care and support they provided to Norris. Donations may be made to the Antioch Community Scholarship Fund, PO BOX 74, Antioch, CA 94509-0007.
