He was the son of Wallace Woodward and Ella Simons Woodward.
On June 7, 1900 as Claude Henry Woodward, he married Julia Amelia Fletcher in the District of Columbia.

Claude H. Woodward was born in the District of Columbia. In 1898, he worked with W.B. Moses & Sons and then with the Globe-Wernicke Co. In 1926, the company merged with Rand-Kardex and he was named head of the Globe-Wernicke division and later became national director of sales. In 1927, he returned to the District as Executive Vice President of the Mount Vernon Savings Bank In 1928 he was named President. In 1932, he was appointed receiver of the Bank of Brightwood and held the position for seven years. In 1937, he was appointed as a member of the District Minimum Wage Board, serving as the representative of employers. He was a member of the District Bankers' Association and was a member of the boards of Mount Vernon Bank, the Bank of Bethesda and the Second National Bank. He was a member of the Washington Board of Trade, serving as assistant to the President. He was the former President of the Kiwanis Club of Washington and held a perfect attendance record of 21 years. He was the oldest living member of the Franklin Lodge, Knights of Pythias. From 1938 to 1952 he was director of the Better Business Bureau. He was the chair of the bureau's Board of Trustees in the early 1920s. He was also a member of the Dawson Lodge No. 16 of the Masons and St. Columba's Episcopal Church at 4201 Albemarle Street Northwest. He died at age 83 on Wednesday, February 8, 1961 in Suburban Hospital. Survivors included his daughter, Mildred C. Shoemaker of 4511 Willard Avenue in Chevy Chase with whom he had lived for five years, one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Funeral Home of Robert A. Pumphrey at 7557 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda. Interment was at Rock Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requested memorial contributions to the Kiwanis Foundation for Crippled Children at the Mayflower Hotel in the District of Columbia.
