Graveside services will take place Saturday, Feb. 3 for Minnie J. Bonham, a longtime resident of the Sheldon area who died Jan. 27, 2007 at the age of 86.
Mrs. Bonham was born June 15, 1920 in Lone Camp, Texas to John and Rebecca (Newberry) Blackwood, and grew up in Jacumba, in southern California.
The family enjoyed the rodeos, mainly one of the riders who captured their hearts, especially that of Minnie, and she and Wesley Bonham were married Jan. 25, 1936 in Yuma, Ariz. The couple lived in Amador County for a while, then moved back to southern California.
During World War II Mr. Bonham served in the U.S. Navy, and Mrs. Bonham was in San Francisco where she worked as a riveter and later for the U.S. post office.
Following the war they purchased 16 acres in Sheldon and lived there for 40 years, raising their daughter Janice. Mrs. Bonham participated in her daughter's activities, serving as a 4-H leader with the Sheldon 4-H Club, and as a member of the Parents Club at Pleasant Grove Elementary School. She also taught Sunday school.
Later she worked as a housekeeper at Sutter Memorial Hospital, and in 1964 proudly received her high school diploma, graduating with her daughter.
Mrs. Bonham and her husband of 67 years enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He preceded her in death as did her siblings, J.T. Blackwood, Hattie Liverca, Milton "Shorty" Blackwood, Raymond Blackwood, Henry Blackwood, James Blackwood and Dora Blackwood Webb.
