Homer was the eldest son of William H. King and Elizabeth E. Hammond, he was born 23 August 1864 on the family farm in Blackcreek Twp, Mercer County, OH. Homer's father was the eldest of 6 brothers born to Jesse and Catherine King, so Homer had numerous King cousins living in Mercer County, additionally he had 4 siblings. Most of the King's of Mercer County were farmers, but a few pursued other occupations, such as carpentry. In the spring of 1890, Homer married Ella Ann Rumple, eldest daughter of Van Wert County farmer and civil war veteran William T. Rumple and his late wife Hannah Gilbert. Both Homer and Ella came from large families and they themselves had eight children: Elsie, Charles, Roxanne, Oscar, Raymond, LeeRoy, Edith and Warren.

At the time of his death, Homer was farming near Tyner, Marshall County, IN. One day in mid-April 1932, Homer was helping a neighbor with his drying hay, stacking it in a hay wagon while standing atop the pile, when he fell and struck his head. Homer lingered in bed for a few days but then died of his injury on 16 April 1932. Present at his bedside were his wife, the attending doctor and granddaughter Ella Dyer. Homer was 67 years old, he was survived by his wife, 6 of his children, 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, a brother (Charles A. King), a sister (Nettie King Cavender) and a half brother (Jesse Springer).
