Armantine Monges was the first child of Dr. Jean Armantaire Monges and Janne Barbe Garnier (the widow Breban), who escaped the slave revolt of Saint Domingue, eventually settling in Philadelphia in 1795. In 1811, Dr. Monges successfully petitioned the Pennsylvania Legislature to declare Armantine and her brother John Armand Monges to be legitimate. Armantine married first John D. Meyer on May 10, 1825. The fate of John Meyer is not known yet, but she married second, on April 10, 1828, Henry Babad, a native of France who was naturalized in 1820. The Babads lived in Brooklyn in 1855, according to the New York census of that year. Following Henry's death on a trip to France in 1869, Armantine lived in New York City. She died at the age of 81 at her residence of 21 West 8th Street on July 5, 1878, and was buried in her father's vault in the Christ Church burial ground in Philadelphia.
