RACINE - Emma F. (nee: Homolka) O'Brien, 97, passed away Friday, January 10, 2003 at Lakeshore Manor. Emma was born in Strathcona, Minn. Emma was born in Strathcona, Minn. April 5, 1905, daughter of the late Anton and Elizabeth (nee: Vanyo) Homolka. On August 28, 1937, Emma was united in marriage to Herbert O'Brien who preceded her in death April 20, 1987. Emma was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge. She will be dearly missed. Survivors include her son, Michael (Lynn) O'Brien of Pewaukee; one daughter, Charlotte (Richard) Becker of Arvada, Colo.; grandchildren, Sean (Amy) O'Brien of Grafton, Erin O'Brien of New Berlin; great-grandson, Rece O'Brien; one sister, Rose Gust of Strathcona, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Emma was also preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Siena Center Chapel 5635 Erie Street, Tuesday, January 14, 2003 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Daniels officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at Siena Center Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to Sisters of St. Dominic Mission Fund have been suggested. The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Lakeshore Manor for their loving and compassionate care given to Emma.

Her father is a farmer.

1920 Census [enumerated February 14]: Emma Homolka (age 14) lives with her mother, Lizzie Boldyzar (age 55) (listed as widowed) and father, Anton Homolka (age 53) (listed as divorced), her siblings, Agnes (age 16), Rosy (age 12), and Anton Homolka (age 11); her half-siblings, Stephen (age 22)and John Boldyzar (age 20); and uncle, John Homolka (age 48), in Poplar Grove, Roseau, Minnesota. Her father is a farmer, and John and Stephen Boldyzar are farm laborers.

1930 Census [enumerated April 5]: Emma Holmolka (age 25) is single and lives with her sister, Agnes Kopecky (age 26), her husband Jerry Kopecky (age 23), their daughter, Eleanor (age 4), and her half-brother, John Boldyzar (age 30), in a house they rent on Franklin Street in Racine, Wisconsin. They live next door to her sister, Rose Gust, Rose's husband Max, and child, Harry, and brother Anton Homolka. Emma is a maid. Jerry Kopecky, John Boldyzar, Anton Homolka and Max Gust all work at an automobile plant.

On August 28, 1937, Emma Homolka (age 32) married Herbert O'Brien (age 24) at St. Rose Church in Racine, Racine, Wisconsin. At the time of her marriage, she was living at 1044 Wisconsin Street in Racine and worked as a waitress.

1940 Census [enumerated April 13]: Emma O'Brien (age 35), her husband, Herbert (age 27), and daughter, Charlotte (age 2), live in a house they rent at 519 9th Street in Racine, Racine, Wisconsin. Herb worked 52 weeks in 1939 with an income of $1,206. Herb is a clerk at a drug store.

In 1947, Emma's mother, Elizabeth Homolka (age 83) and her half-brother, John Boldyzar (age 48), moved to Racine from Minnesota and lived with her family at 266 Jones Street.

On January 10, 2003, Emma O'Brien (age 97) died of natural causes at St. Luke's Hospital. She lived at Lakeshore Manor at 1320 Wisconsin Avenue.

Emma and Herbert O'Brien had one daughter and one son.
