Biographical notes on members of the Hosmer family
Dr. Hiram Hosmer (1798-1862)
Born in Walpole NH, one of 12 children of Jonas Hosmer, a farmer
*as a boy worked on father's farm and occasionally for neighbors for small payment
*went to school at a district school and at an academy for one term; learned the trade of cabinetmaker but wanted to be a doctor
*studied (and worked) with Dr. Twitchell in Keene, NH and with Drs. Hale and Watkins in Troy, NY
*attended lectures in Boston and received a degree from Harvard University in 1824
*moved to Watertown in 1824 and lived here for the rest of his life; married Sarah Watson Grant in 1827 and they had four children
Mrs. Hosmer died young, in 1836 and three of their four children died too; Harriet was the only member of Dr. Hosmer's family who survived him
Dr. Hosmer remembered as having a "kind face," for his experience, "great professional tact," and good judgment
A contemporary wrote: "He was esteemed wherever he was known. He was not a great book-man, but was a diligent student of nature, and ever studied carefully the diagnosis of his patients, ans well as the mode of treatment. He was jidicious in the treatment of the sick, not afraid of powerful medicines when such were really needed, but more commonly employed mild remedies."
He died April 1862.

Father of Sarah Helen "Helen" Hosmer [b.November 5, 1828 (13) d.July 4, 1842]; Harriet Goodhue Hosmer; Hiram Twitchell Hosmer [b. December 1832, d. February 1833]and George Grant Hosmer[b. 1834 d. circa 1834 d. 18]. Harriet was the only child to survive to adulthood.
Hiram, George and their mother all apparently died of turbucellosis.
