Milliken, a Senior Chief Special Warfare Officer and of class 245, was killed during an operation against the terrorist group al-Shabaab in a remote area about 40 miles west of Mogadishu. He grew up in the Portland area and graduated from Cheverus High School in Falmouth, where he was one of the school’s top track stars. He enlisted in the Navy after graduating college and operated with SEAL Team 6, an elite counter-terrorism unit. He was assigned to an East Coast-based special warfare unit that was supporting Somali National Army-led operations. He was the first U.S. soldier to die in Somalia since 1993, when 18 U.S. servicemen were killed after two helicopters were shot down over Mogadishu.
“Senior Chief Kyle Milliken embodied the warrior spirit and toughness infused in our very best Navy SEALs,” Rear Admiral Timothy Szymanski, commander of Naval Special Warfare Command, said in a statement. “We grieve his death, but we celebrate his life and many accomplishments. He is irreplaceable as a husband, father, son, friend and teammate – and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and teammates". Senior Chief Milliken was a 15 year decorated veteran with over 30 honors, including four Bronze Stars.
