Cleve was the son of C. W. Whitaker and Martha (Birdwell) Whitaker.

Information concerning Cleve's tragic passing was published in the Carroll County Democrat on November 16, 1917. Cleve's brother, "Dock" Whitaker, and the Carroll Co, TN Sheriff, N. G. Kirk, were both also injured in the incident that occurred 4 miles NE of Huntingdon.

Cleve is most likely buried in the Jones Cemetery, where his mother was buried a few years earlier, and where several of his siblings are buried, but his grave is apparently no longer marked.
