June M. Dunham Hess died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at her home on the family farm near Nezperce with her cat, KitCat, curled at her side.

June was born May 20, 1922, to Robert William Dunham and Minnie May Anderson Dunham in the Indian Valley area.
June's parents died when she was young, leaving her an orphan. She lived with various relatives until the approximate age of 7 when she was taken in by her eldest brother,
Joseph Edward Dunham , and his wife Mabel Marie Mosman Dunham and raised with their family. They lived for a time in Clarkston before returning to the Midvale, Idaho, area.

June attended high school in Star, Idaho, and Midvale, graduating from Cambridge High School at the age of 16 as salutatorian in 1939. She played the drums in the band and was affectionately known as the "killer guard" on the girl's basketball team.

June attended the University of Idaho for one semester and was forced to quit because of illness. She always considered UI her alma mater and boasted such to her grandchildren.

After leaving college, she moved to Nezperce to live with Dunham relatives and recuperate. June waited tables for a time, and then she went to work for the Triple A Office, now Farm Service Agency, as a mapper. In later years she worked at Thomas Grocery.

In June's own words, she told her family of seeing a tall, handsome drink of water walking down the street in Nezperce and asked her friend who he was. While June was watching Howard Hess, he was watching her sashaying down the street and decided she was for him.

June married Howard L. Hess on Aug. 29, 1942. They lived in the town of Nezperce for a short time before moving to the family farm. They had three sons and two daughters. June and Howard had been married 65 years at the time of Howard's death on Dec. 29, 2007. June was Howard's right-hand man, always at his beck and call, whether it be rock picking, driving a grain truck, handing him tools as repairs were made, mending fence, tending and feeding livestock, riding with him in his planes or cooking for hay and harvest crews.

June's cooking and canning skills were known far and wide and enjoyed by family, friends, workers or any stray Howard happened to bring home for a meal. The Hesses never had any trouble finding a hay crew, as all looked forward to June's meals.

Her lifetime hobbies included gardening, sewing, playing bridge, crocheting and knitting. June was an avid reader and enjoyed a good book. She was a sports fan and enjoyed following sports activities, especially her grandchildren's.

She continued working her flower gardens, tending her houseplants, and caring for her dog, Zip, and cat, KitCat, until her 90th year, forever and always a farmer and rancher. Honoring Mom's wishes, the family managed to keep her in her home until the time of her death.

Survivors names omitted per findagrave policy.

June was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; stillborn twin siblings; her four brothers, Don, Joe, Jack and Ray Dunham; stepdaughter Darlene Snyder; and stepgrandson Dean Snyder.
