Frederick Twede
Baird
1924 ~ 2017
Frederick Twede Baird, 93, passed away May 8, 2017, in his home in Provo, Utah. Fred was born April 5, 1924, in Provo, to Abner Harley and Hazel Twede Baird. Fred loved growing up on the farm in Payson's West Mountain and enjoyed observing nature and working the land. Fred believed there was a reason he was born to his family at this particular time and place in the world's history.
While on a short military leave during World War II, Fred married his sweetheart Sarah Orton, on December 19, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple. Three days after their wedding, Fred received a wire telling him that his furlough was canceled and to report to duty immediately. He was honored to serve his country and recently enjoyed going to Washington DC on a veteran's Honor Flight.
Fred and Sarah began their family in Payson and moved to Orem a few years later. Fred worked as a millwright at Geneva Steel for 30 years, receiving many awards. After retiring, he had a successful real estate career and family business, F. T. Baird and Sons.
Fred loved being outdoors with his family. Fishing and hunting adventures still live on in the amusing stories told and retold many times over. He was an avid BYU sports fan. Fred and Sarah recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Fred and Sarah have nine children: Dennis (Christine), Vickie (deceased), Lonnie (deceased) (Julie), Scott (Bonnie), Jill (Arthur) Allen, Jackie (Mark) Standing, Chad (Cathy), Kimberli (Brian) Westover, Daren (Camille). They have 40 grandchildren and 86 great grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his brother Robert, sister Rachel McOmber, and brother Alan. He has one surviving sister, Ruth Bartholomew.
Fred loved the Lord. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he bore frequent testimony of the restored gospel and served throughout his life in various church callings. These included several bishoprics, two missions with his companion Sarah (Oregon-Portland and Mississippi-Jackson) and many years of service in the Provo temple. He especially loved serving in his BYU branches and wards. From the steel plant, he obtained a small iron rod for each member in his ward and asked them to put it in their pocket or hang it from the mirror of their car to remind them to "Hold to the Rod", to remember who they are, and to make good choices. Many still have their Iron Rod and remember his teachings.
An avid family historian, Fred used cutting-edge technology and DNA to help solve family research puzzles. Many on the other side of the veil will thank him for linking them to his family. As Dad so often advised us: We will "Remember, Oh Remember!"
Friends may call at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E 800 N Orem, Sunday May 14, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm and at the Pleasant View 5th Ward, East Sharon Stake Center, 2400 N 1060 E Provo, on Monday May 15, from 10:30 -11:30 am.
