For many years Robert & I took exercise classes at LaGuardia Community College. As we had both been teachers, that was an initial bond. Later, as two older guys trying to remain active, we'd remind each other, "keep moving." Robert, though retired from teaching, was at heart, still a teacher. He was very personable with and helpful to the many young women & men who worked at LaGuardia, or who took classes there. Listening to some of Robert's exchanges with them, it was clear that the young folks liked speaking with him, and learned from him. He corrected their English, explained things to them, and they'd thank him. Robert was a great reader, frequently asking if I'd read a particular book, or recommending one to read. He also kept himself mentally engaged by attending lectures on many topics. Robert was also dutiful to his very elderly mother, visiting her frequently. He said her significant cognitive impairment rendered it unlikely that she knew he was her son. But he felt it important to visit, saying that sometimes he felt his Mom, did know, albeit it fleeting, him as her son. Robert was a personable, generous & warm spirited man. He will be missed.

Mr. Costa inspired his students, PARTICULARLY those of us who were members of the H.O.P.E Club (Hillcrest Organization for Peace on Earth) to think CRITICALLY, to listen carefully, and, WHILE doing so, dare to stand for deep-going social change, regardless of how controversial. In 1995, Mr. Costa joined a small # of other staff and a group of students he mentored that year, along with other students in welcoming Kenia Serrano to Hillcrest High School, a Cuban youth who at the time was touring the United States. In doing so, Mr. Costa helped young people including myself learn a broader perspective regarding a controversial issue then and down to this day. Students were pleased that Mr. Costa always encouraged us to think "outside the box". THANK YOU, MR. COSTA. Your work with students, including myself, has not been in vain. Mr. Costa once said, "Peace must not be just hoped for, it must be planned and FOUGHT for".
Robert Costa is probably a good example of someone who is book smart but has zero real-world experience building companies or running a business who likes to criticize others and still lived with his parents.
