Killed In Action Mission - Shortly after take-off from Takhli RTAB the #2 engine failed. The pilot attempted to return and land but the aircraft sank rapidly on the approach and touched down wheels up on rough ground about 1,200 feet short of the runway. The aircraft slid along the ground, caught fire and exploded.

Shortly after leaving from Takhli his #2 engine was lost after takeoff.

Maj Nichols attempted to land and at first it appeared that he would be successful but then the aircraft sank rapidly on the approach and touched down with its wheels up on rough ground about 1,200 feet short of the runway.

The aircraft slid along the ground but caught fire and exploded.

Only two of the EWOs from the crew of seven escaped the inferno.

- as a cadet, served as flight commander, executive officer, and activities officer and made the Commandant's List six semesters
- 1960, named All-Conference Football Halfback and All-Conference Basketball Forward
- 1961, attended US Naval Prep School
- earned 1 AFCM, 1 DFC
- memorial fund used for War Memorial, a seat plate in the Falcon Stadium, and for improvements and a memorial plaque for the 6th Squadron's air power room, which was dedicated to his memory
- buried in the USAFA Cemetery and name is on the USAFA War Memorial
