History - As recorded by Laura Mariah Read (spelling maintained):

My mother, Laura Ann Gibbs was married to John B. Gibbs at Batava, New York, Sep. 16th 1833. When she was 19 years old they moved to Kalamazoo, Mich. where they lived several years. She was the mother of four boys: William Henry; Horice Dewitt; Alfred Secevillon, who died; and Alfred Gully. While the boys were very small she embraced the Gospel of the L.D.S., but her husband would not and could not be endused to join with her. He would not let her have any of the children but the youngest who she took and went with the people she loved. She gave up her people, friends, home, husband and children, wealth, and everything she had for her religen.

She went with the Saints to Nauvoo and endured all the hardships and sufferings they went through. She knew the Prophet Joseph Smith and familey well, her Grandmother Mack, being a second cousin of his Mother. She came with the Saints when they were driven West in Winter Quarters. They suffered many hardships. Hardly a day passed without some accident while crossing the Plaines, but at last they arived in Salt Lake Vally on September 4th 1847. She was always true to her relion. It always came first.

She taught school in the 17th Ward in Sister Lamson's home on North Temple and 1st West Street. Sister Edna and Julina Lamson Smith, wifes of the Prophet Joseph F. Smith, were two of her puples. They always called mother Aunt Laura.

She married Rufas Beach in Nauvoo and he died in Cal. where he was sent in 1849 by the Church. By him she had Sarah Elenda Beach Read and Kathreon Ann Beach Toponce of Ogden who are still living. Brother Beach went to Calif. with the gold digers and died in S. F. in 1849. He was sent then by the church.

Then she married Wm Danial Wood of Bountifull, Utah, by whom she become the mother of two girls, Emma Adell Wood Tolman of Pocatello, Idaho, and Henryetta Wood Harsh of Salt Lake City. He did not treat her children right. He was not a good husband or father so she seperated from him.

At the time of the move she went to Springville, Utah and staid there 3 years teaching school there. When the Saints come back to S.L. she married my father, Samual George Read in 1862. She was married to my father by Judge Smith at his home on North Teple in the 17th Ward.

I was born Aug 9th 1863 in the same ward, Salt Lake City, on first west where the properity lately owned by Mary and Josh Davis. It belonged to my mother when Johnsons Army came and the people went South. She went as far as Springville and taught school there for 3 years. She married my father after her return here.

My father was bookkeeper for the Deseret News untill he estabished business for himself under the firm name of the London News Dealer by the old Salt Lake Theater. He was still in that business when he died in 1893, 5 months after the death of my mother. He died at the home of his son's, Walter. P. Read, supertendant of the old St. Rail Road Co. He was a loutenent in the British Army, fought the Crimea War and knew Florance Nitengale, the first war nurse in Inda.

My father came with the Handcart Companey from Iowa 1860. He lived in mother's family from that day untill a year after when she married him.
