DANA BUSHMAN
(1959 - 2017)

D. Bushman Enjoyed Life, Sister Says
Woman, 57, Killed in Fire was Native of St. Nazianz

Dana Bushman had a passion for both art and nature and loved her dogs. The St. Nazianz native died last week in a fire that also displaced 88 other residents of a northside Manitowoc apartment building. Bushman, 57, was found dead after a fire broke out in her apartment shortly after 3:30 pm on May 10 at Parkview Haven, an apartment complex north of Lincoln Park, where many of the residents are senior citizens or people with disabilities.

Her younger sister, Carrie Bruentrup of New Orleans, recalled many attributes of this "sweet, wonderful person". Bruentrup said her sister designed and made stain glass, mostly for decorations, often with designs related to American Indians. "She had wonderful designs." Bruentrup said, "She did not find patterns, she actually drew her own patterns." Bushman's artistic ability extended beyond stain glass, Bruentrup said. "She really loved doing her artwork.", Bruentrup said., "She could embroider and sew circles around anyone I knew. She had a talent for it. It is one thing to draw or paint something, It is another to make it into clothes or backpacks."

Whether living in Michigan, Colorado or more recently back in Manitowoc, Bushman loved the outdoors, her sister said. The 1977 Valders High School graduate previously worked and lived on the east shore of Lake Michigan where she enjoyed the beach and sand dunes, her sister said. "She enjoyed the outdoors quite a bit, Bruentrup added. After about 15 years in Michigan, Bushman moved to Colorado. "She lived up in the mountains," Bruentrup said. "She would go walking up in the mountains."

After Bushman suffered a hip injury, she returned to Manitowoc about a year ago. "She would walk out to the lighthouse", Bruentruup said of her sister, "It was a bit of a walk but she enjoyed it. She liked nature. She liked being near the lake and seeing the water." Also she said her sister loved animals and bred dogs. "She really enjoyed animals," Bruentrup said, "She always had a dog in her life, several days usually." In her vocation, Bushman did secretarial work for many years after completion of a secretarial course at Patricia Stevens College in Milwaukee, Bruentrup said.

A memorial mass will start at 11 am Saturday at St. Gregory Catholic church in St. Nazianz with the Rev. Patrick Nelson S.D.S. officiating. Visitation will be from 9 am to 10:45 am at the church, under the direction of Christianson & Deja Funeral Home of Valders.
