BURLINGTON, VT. - Bernard Elliot Hayes, age 78, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday evening, July 7th 1996 at the Birchwood Terrace Healthcare in Burlington, Vt.

Bernard was born on September 26th 1917 in Burlington, Vt., he was the son of Yvonne (Gauvreau) and Frederick "Fred" Oscar Hayes.

Bernard was educated at Nazareth and Cathedral schools in Burlington, Vt.

He served in the Army as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.

He married the former Marian Margaret Byrnes on October 9th 1943 in Burlington, Vermont.

He was employed by state and local governments until his retirement.

He had most recently worked as a Unemployment Counselor for the State of Vermont.

Bernard prided himself in his gardening and cooking abilities.

He had been active in city politics and within the Democratic Party in his earlier years.

He was predeceased by his parents, one sister; Yvonne, and one brother; Roland.
